Gum Disease Introduction - Naperville Dental Office

A majority of Americans over 35 years old have some form of gum (periodontal) disease. In the beginning, the gum line might swell a little and bleed some. The worst case scenario of gum disease is you may lose your teeth. Ultimately, if you want to keep your teeth then you must care for your gums.

The human mouth has millions of germs, some of which are harmless. Certain types of bacteria can attack teeth and gums areas. Bacterial germs exist in sticky film of slime called plaque. This is a common cause of gum disease. When plaque is not removed regularly, it builds up on the teeth roots and irritates the gums causing inflammation. This leads to bleeding gums. If plaque is not removed, the inflammation will cause bone tissue to be dissolved. The teeth will then become loose and may need to be extracted.

Most people do not know anything about gum disease, it's symptoms or treatments. Not many people realize that their teeth may be lost due to this problem. Approximately 50% of the population does not see a dentist at all. The Surgeon General in 2000 called bad oral health a “silent epidemic” and recommended a national effort to improve dental health for all Americans.

It is encouraging that most gum disease is preventable. Quality oral hygiene must be done daily to prevent the problem. That involves mainly brushing and flossing. Having your teeth professionally cleaned and checked at a dental office may reverse the early stage of the disease. You can keep your teeth for a lifetime. The Food and Drug Administration has approved several products that diagnose, treat and regenerate bone loss. These products will help improve the professional care you are provided.

Gum disease is called periodontal disease. It is a bacterial germ growth that breaks down the gum and bone tissue around the teeth. The term “periodontal” means “surrounding the tooth.” Gum disease begins with plaque on your teeth and their roots. It is always forming and is hardly noticed. When plaque attaches to teeth it can harden if not removed. Hardened plaque is called tartar. Tartar acts like a cement and sticks to the teeth so strongly that it can be removed only during a professional cleaning.
