Periodontal Disease Treatment

People that have advanced gum disease require a multi step treatment. Sometimes the dentist will suggest forms of medication as an initial therapy for advanced gum disease before recommending periodontal surgery. Each case is different so treatment approach will depend on the severity of your gum disease.

Medications used for Care of Advanced Periodontal Disease

There are several possibilities when it comes to medicine for the treatment of advanced periodontal disease. Here is a list of them:

 1. Antibiotic Gel: Gel that contains the antibiotic doxycycline can be placed under the gum tissue and between teeth. Doxycycline is a form of tetracycline. It provides periodontal treatment by killing germs and reducing the gum pockets caused by periodontal disease. The dentist places the gel into the pockets after a  deep cleaning procedure. The doxycycline is gradually released gradually over a one week period.

 2. Antiseptic Chlorhexidine Chip: Another gum disease treatment involves inserting a little, antimicrobial gel tab into a gum pocket. The gel tab is placed between teeth and under the gum after a deep cleaning. The antimicrobial is dissolves slowly over a period of time.

 3. Antibiotic Microspheres: This method of treating advanced gum disease involves squirting small amount of Minocycline microspheres under the gums. This antibiotic is a powder form of doxycycline. The antibiotic works best after a deep cleaning called scaling and root planning.

 4. Antibiotic Pill form: The dentist may prescribe an oral antibiotic pill for treating advanced gum disease.   A prescription of doxycycline oral medication can help kill germs and reduce bacterial toxins from damaging periodontal tissues.

Treatment of Advanced Periodontal Disease Needs Your Help

Treatment of advanced gum disease in the dental office is only part of the answer to correcting this problem. Treatment of periodontal disease methods include a professional dental cleaning, deep cleaning, gum surgery and antimicrobials. No matter what treatment is provided, it is of great importance to keep up a daily dental care regimen at home. Keeping the teeth clean will allow the gums to recover and heal.

 Gum Disease and Overall Health

Gum disease symptoms may indicate other health problems besides a gum problem. Research suggests that gum disease problems may be associated with an increased risk of other problems throughout the body. Therefore, if you have a medical condition, be aware of gum disease symptoms. See your dentist regularly for examination of any gum disease symptoms if they appear.
