How to Treat Gingivitis

Most people don’t know they have gingivitis and very few know how the condition is treated. But gingivitis is such a common problem that millions of people have it every year. One question is how can you tell if you have it? You may be flossing or brushing actively and notice that your gums start to bleed. The bleeding is an indication inflammation is present in your gums and that you might have gingivitis. Once you realize what is wrong you need to know how to treat the problem.

Five Steps to Treat Gingivitis

There are several methods for treating gingivitis. Most are effective and easy as long as the gingivitis is caught in the beginning. Seeing the dentist regularly will help you stay on top of the situation.

Step1: Have a professional dental cleaning. If plaque is allowed to harden it becomes tartar. Tartar is a very hard substance that can not be removed with a toothbrush. The dental hygienist will need to use dental tools to get the tartar off the teeth.

Step 2: Improve your home toothbrushing. Be sure to brush at least 2 full minutes reaching all areas of your mouth. Brushing along the gum line is essential to get plaque below the edge of the gum.

Step 3: Floss daily. Dental floss removes food and plaque between teeth and under gums. It will make your gums healthier.

Step 4: Rinse every time you brush with an antibacterial rinse. This will kill germs and strengthen gums.

Step 5: Take vitamin C. This vitamin has been shown to improve gum health.

Knowing how to care for gingivitis will help you heal your gums and provide excellent oral health. Prevention is always the best way to avoid gingivitis. Using the steps above you can go a long way toward preventing gum inflammation causing gingivitis.
