Naperville Dental: What is Gingivitis

What is Gingivits?

Gingivitis is the redness that surrounds the gum line of teeth. The redness is inflammation and is the beginning stage of gum disease. If gingivitis is not treated, it may progress into periodontitis which can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis is usually present without pain and therefore most patients are unaware they have it. Seeing the dentist regularly will provide an assessment of your gums and allow you to learn more about gum disease. You will find that good oral hygiene is the key to healthy gums.

What Causes Gingivitis?

The main factor contributing to the development of gingivitis is plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky clear film that contains bacteria and regularly attaches to teeth. The germs buildup in masses and release toxins that damage gum tissue. Although gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease, the condition is reversible. Without treatment the gum tissue will undergo more breakdown.

 Signs of Gingivitis:

1) Red inflammation of gum tissue due to plaque.

 2) Tender or swollen gums.

3) Gums areas that bleed easily.

How Can You Prevent Gingivitis? The most important thing you can do to prevent gingivitis is removing plaque. Good toothbrushing is key to achieving a clean mouth. Here is routine you can follow daily to maintain oral health.

First, rinse thoroughly with an antibacterial rinse before and after brushing. Rinsing before you brush will help lubricate and disinfect your oral tissues before you begin. Then while brushing and flossing, you will push some of the rinse under your gum killing germs where they exist.

Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush or soft electric brush such as the Oral-B Vitality rechargeable. This will remove more plaque than a manual brush. Use an antibacterial toothpaste with fluoride like Crest or Colgate. The toothpastes help strengthen enamel with the fluoride and kills the germs that cause gum problems.

Floss at least once per day to remove food and plaque between teeth and under gums.
