Controlling Cavity Pain

Almost everyone has experienced at some point that familiar ache in your mouth that you're fairly certain is caused by tooth cavity pain. A dental cavity can occur anytime, and not only does it cause discomfort, but it can lead to infection and eventual tooth loss.

If you happen to be many miles away from home you need a quick fix to help you control your tooth pain until you can get to your dentist. Consider these ideas to help you manage that troublesome cavity pain.

Tips for Managing Cavity Pain

-Avoid sugary foods and extremely hot or cold beverages that can increase cavity pain.

-Brush your teeth gently. While it may cause more pain at first, it’s important to keep food and plaque out of your teeth to avoid further breakdown.

-Eat soft foods that don’t require much chewing to prevent pain. Avoid hard and crunchy snacks that require a lot of chewing pressure.

-Use mouth rinse after eating to help remove food from teeth. Using a fluoride rinse will not only remove food and freshen your breath, but it can help strengthen teeth by rebuilding enamel.

-Contact your dentist as soon as possible. Even if you’re away from home, your dentist may recommend you use a simple pain relieving agent to help manage the tooth cavity pain until you get help. Additionally, if you call the dentist office while you’re away, you can make an appointment at your convenience to see the dentist as soon as you get home.
