What Are The Causes of Cavities?

Tooth cavities are holes in the teeth resulting from bacterial germ acid eating away enamel. They usually start on the top of the enamel and can spread to the soft inside layer of the tooth called dentin. Decay also occurs when food sugars become trapped between teeth and turn into acid. Tooth brushing and flossing needs to remove those food particles and neutralize the acid. Bacterial germs living in our mouths consume these foods and generate acidic byproducts that can eat away at tooth enamel.

How Can I Prevent Cavities In My Teeth?

Fluoride helps stop cavities from forming by slowing the breakdown of enamel and speeding up the remineralization of enamel. New enamel crystals that form with fluoride are harder, larger and more resistant to acid. Typical fluoride sources are fluoridated drinking water, toothpaste, and oral mouth rinses. Tell your dentist if your drinking water does not have fluoride in it. You may be recommended to use high-concentration fluoride gels and toothpastes. To help strengthen weak decalcified enamel spots, and help prevent the onset of tooth decay, brush frequently with a fluoride toothpaste.

Most modern toothpastes on the market offer good protection against cavities, gingivitis, plaque, teeth sensitivity and tartar buildup. They all while freshen your breath. Some also are formulated to provide excellent whitening benefits and have received the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association. Daily brushing, regular flossing and professional cleanings will help prevent cavities and help preserve your oral health.
