Prevent Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease refers to the many forms of gum disease, ranging from mild inflammation of gingivitis to severe soft tissue gum abscesses. Periodontal disease sets in when the bacterial plaque builds up and produces toxins on the roots of teeth. This will cause a systemic response from the body’s immune system which can result in tenderness and inflammation of the gums. If not treated in the early stages, gum disease can progress from reversible mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 80 percent of American adults have some form of gum disease called periodontal disease. You can help avoid periodontal disease by knowing the common risk factors and by following a daily dental care regimen.

List of Key Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease

Key risk factors for periodontal disease are:

1. Smoking: If you can stop smoking you will improve your chances of preventing periodontal disease. Smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal disease. The smoke deposits a sticky stain on the teeth and roots that is not easily removed with brushing. This allows plaque to attach to the roots and creates inflammation in the gums. Also the chemicals in smoke are toxic to gums tissue. Continuing to smoke will work against all forms of gum treatment and prevent your gums from healing.

2. Diabetes and Medical Disorders: Diabetes is another major factor associated with risk for gum disease. Generally most people with diabetes will have some problem with periodontal disease.  Additionally, chemotherapy or other treatments for illnesses such as cancer, AIDS and heart disease will increase your risk for gum disease.

3. Hormones: Research demonstrates that hormone changes can make the gum tissues more susceptible to inflammation and periodontal disease. Hormonal changes including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and monthly menstruation cause increased inflammation in your gums. Extra care for your gums during these physiological changes will help prevent periodontal disease.

4. Medicines: Medicines that dry your mouth will increase your chances of having gum disease. Saliva protects us against periodontal disease by washing plaque and bacteria from the teeth. It also helps prevent plaque from sticking to teeth.

5. Heredity: Some people are more susceptible to having a periodontal problem because of their family history. If your family tends to have gum disease, then you will be at increased risk. Studies have shown a substantial genetic risk for periodontal disease.

6. Stress: It is well known that stress can make it harder for the body to fight infection and inflammation. The same is true for gingivitis and more advanced periodontal disease.
